Has the baby boom generation ruined things for the young?

I found this interesting feature on BBC2’s Newsnight and felt I had to post it to the attention of the youth of today.

The feature posed the question of has the “baby boom” generation of the post war 50’s & 60’s ruined things for the young - enjoying an economic boom, low tax, and big pensions while the young are unemployed, saddled with debt and unable to buy houses?

The feature includes a report from Justin Rowlatt and a discussion chaired by Jeremy Paxman.  Joining him on the discussion are David Willets, Catherine Flett, Emma Soanes, Lucy Parson, Andrew Hankinson and George Lewkowicz.

I would also like to take this opportunity to enforce one of the point raised in the discussion and this is the importance of using your votes this coming election.

Catch the programme on BBC iplayer @ http://bbc.co.uk/i/r9xzr/. The programme is only available through BBC iPlayer until 11th March so you had better be quick if you want to see it.

For further reading there is also the book by David Willets called The Pinch: How the Baby Boomers Took Their Children's Future - And Why They Should Give it Back, and also here is a link to a review of the book by Richard Reeves http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/feb/07/the-pinch-david-willetts

Lucy Parson, Andrew Hankinson also write for the guardian and have many articles on the youth of today. Here is a link to Lucy’s article on this issue @ http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/oct/21/youngpeople-creditcrunch and also Andrew’s @ http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2010/jan/31/unemployed-graduates-credit-crunch-andrew-hankinson also interesting are some of the reply posts at the bottom of their article with replies from both young and older people.

I hope everyone who comes across this blog post finds it interesting and I welcome any comments that anyone has on the matter.

Thanks All, Devs
