Launched! The Youth of Today Teachers' Zone
The Youth of Today could be coming to a school or college near you. Register your interest.
The Youth of Today Teachers’ Zone, developed by the Citizenship Foundation, offers support to anyone working in education with the passion to help their students’ fulfill their leadership potential. Recognising that young people can be leaders in any setting, in the community, within their family, or in schools and colleges, The Youth of Today Teachers’ Zone offers guidance, support and examples of young people displaying leadership.
The Youth of Today Teachers’ Zone is a forum for educationalists to share best practice and voice opinions about stimulating youth leadership opportunities in an educational setting. The Teachers’ Zone will also be offering resources specifically set around the citizenship and enterprise curriculums. These lesson plans will develop leadership life skills and social relationships that are essential for young peoples’ success in education, the workplace and their local communities
Those working in schools and colleges are invited to register their schools’ interest by becoming a member of the Teachers’ Zone. In doing so, schools and colleges can promote their individual inspiring stories of how young people lead in their organisation.
As members, schools and colleges will have automatic access to the upcoming The Youth of Today Teachers’ Zone competition – “Spotlight on Success”.
“Spotlight on Success” is a termly award, which celebrates schools and colleges that have a commitment, passion and dedication towards youth leadership. The winning school each term will be endorsed by The Youth of Today giving them access to national leadership events, free resources, and regular support from all aspects of The Youth of Today programmes. And of course our very exclusive plaques and student badges!

Adam Nichols, speaking on behalf of The Youth of Today, said: “Anyone who works with young people in schools or colleges sees the huge potential there is for young people to lead. They need to be motivated and their achievements need to be celebrated. England’s teachers do this on a daily basis.
“The Teachers’ Zone has been developed after feedback from teachers and young people that they want to know more about the youth leadership opportunities available from the youth sector and from enterprise. Just by looking at the site, you can see the wealth of opportunities already in existence and now available in one place. Every educational institution can get involved.”

Notes to Editors
The Youth of Today, launched in July 2009, is a consortium of leading youth organisations working together to increase the quality, quantity and diversity of opportunities for young people as leaders of change in their communities. The commitment for a Youth Leadership Body was set out in Aiming High for Young People: A ten year strategy for positive activities. Aimed at young people aged 13 to 19, it is funded and supported by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and Communities and Local Government and led by The National Youth Agency, British Youth Council, Changemakers, Citizenship Foundation, The Prince's Trust, UK Youth Parliament and the Young Foundation.
An exciting new range of programmes are being launched from July 2009. These include:
• The Youth of Today Leadership Fund: a £1million youth sector investment
• A Local Councillor Shadowing Programme
• Central Government Ministerial Shadowing Programme
• The Youth of Today Fellowship, opening up networking and training opportunities to 600 young people.
