My day shadowing Yvette Cooper

I arrived at the Department for Work and Pensions at 9:30 and the day started with a team review; which revises everything that needs to be done over the next week. Then I went to a diary meeting with Yvette Cooper (minister for work and pensions) to go over what she has to do and when. Then Yvette had a 1-1 with her permanent secretary so I took the opportunity to get to know the team more and find out what they specialise in. Later on in the day we had a media/press meeting for Yvette to decide whether or not to appear on BBC 10 tonight and various newspaper article plans.

While Yvette had other meetings with her permanent secretary I decided to learn about other departments that work with youth unemployment. Then towards the end of the day we had a 2 hour seminar about youth unemployment and budgeting which included a conference call with someone from New York.

I learnt that the life of a minister can be very hectic, it's very fast paced but you get some amazing rewards out of it.I don't think I could give a specific time of the day that was the best. The whole day was a great opportunity and I recommend anyone who wants to see politics at its highest to go for it to

What I found most surprising was that the minister’s team are very supportive of both the ministers professionally and personally wellbeing. After this day I'd love to go into politics...But at the moment I want to represent the needs of the young people. Over all I learnt so many skills but in particular that that in such a fast paced environment it is much better to work in a team.
