You may be interested to know that the report on the Speakers conference on Parliamentary representation was released last week, which The Youth of Today partner the Citizenship Foundation contributed to.
Interestingly the third recommendation is for the “public sector to encourage the next generation of leaders by appointing members of under-represented groups to supernumerary positions on boards and other bodies”
You can read the report at http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/spconf/239/239i.pdf

Very interesting publication, espescially in relation to the need to re-establish faith in political parties and represenation. I have been starting to despair at the party system and have always felt quite disengaged from parties, due to the high level of compromise and 'black and whiteness' I have observed.
Not all parties are subject to this though. I find I am drawn to the green party more and more. Caroline lucas is inspirational and seems so throroughly down to earth. They also nurture local activism and involvement very well in my experience.
Under-representation is a persistent problem and with women, a result of the lifestyle required as a parliamentary candidate.
A good paper to stimulate debate and increase scrutiny of this area though.
Thanks for your comment . Completely agree how easy it is to become disengaged with the political structures here in the UK when at times they are not the representative mix we need for an effective democracy.
Hopefully the speakers' conference will help open up this debate more and encourage a wider mix of people in the institutions that represent the public.
