The Young Foundation's Youth Leadership Team: initial feedback on the role
On Saturday 11 July, the Young Foundation held an induction day for their Youth Leadership Team (YLT). The YLT will help sift through the Fund applications and contribute to the decision making considering which organisations benefit from the money.
Here is some feedback from some of the YLT:
"During the first Leadership team day, I expected to find out more on what the role of the YLT would include and to see if the team of the future could really make a difference to the way we select and fund the companies chosen.
By the end of the day, I had a clear view of what the role would be like and I had a good feeling of how much of a difference the first young team would make to the companies selected. This is a huge opportunity for young children and I think every young person in the future should be offered something like this, it gives 13 - 19 year olds great responsibility and it may change the stereotypical view of teenagers." (Louie Welford, 14, Weymouth)
"Young people in this country are going to benefit hugely from The Youth of Today Leadership Fund. Organisations will now be able to fund projects for young people that will allow us to develop our skills and potential as leaders.
This will let us be active in our communities and bring about meaningful change. Such projects are essential especially where they provide opportunities and activities for youths from different cultural backgrounds to come together to develop skills and be involved in a whole range of projects from arts and sports, to media. Often they challenge violence or develop community safety and tackling community issues.
It's important that young people (us) are on board to assess applications being received for The Youth of Today Leadership Fund because the organisations applying for the funding are meant to be providing activities and leadership opportunities that are beneficial to (us) youths. It is only right that we look through the applications to see if they would actually significantly benefit us both short and long term." (Seun Oshinaike, 19, Dagenham)
